  3.     Discuss the character of Lady Macbeth.
Ans: - Shakespeare uses many lady characters in the negative role but Lady Macbeth from “Macbeth” is far more strong, powerful and ruthless than Goneril from “King Lear” and Sycorax from “Tempest”. She is more ambitious about the prophecies made by the witches than Macbeth and can do any to make his husband the king of Scotland. In fact, some critics also criticize her as the fourth witch in “Macbeth”. After being informed about the prophecies, it only she who instantly planes to murder Duncan and instigates Macbeth to do that. But this is not, she also managed the situation when Macbeth sees the ghost at the banquet hall. It can be said that Lady Macbeth is more responsible for Macbeth’s fatal destiny. But at the end of the play, she kills herself because of the pangs of conscience.

 4.  What did each of the three witches predict to Macbeth when he first met them? What did they tell Banquo?
Ans: - The wired sisters or the three witches play a very significant role in giving a play keynote to the rest of the story. The first meeting of the witches took place when Macbeth and Banquo were returning from the battlefield after winning. The witches appeared suddenly out of nothing. While dancing in their own way, the first witch addressed Macbeth as the ‘Thane of Glamis’. The second witch called him as the ‘Thane of Cawdor’ which he was yet to be. And the third witch said that he will be the ‘King of Scotland’ in future. When Banquo asked them to say something about him they said that he would not be the king but his successor would be and hailed Banquo as “Not so happier, yet much happier”. Thus by making prophecies about the two generals, the witches fixed the plot of the story.
