 3.     "Shoes comes by devilish like that will burn your feet"— Who said this and to whom? What is the significance of this line? What aspect of the speaker's character is reflected here?
Ans: -  In Langston Hughes' short story 'Thank You Ma'am', Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones said this to a teen-age boy Roger.

By the above-mentioned line, Mrs. Jones wanted to say that anything achieved by the wrong way would ultimately hurt.  Here, she meant that if Roger would have bought his shoes by stealing money, it would turn him into a thief in the future and would bring harm to him.

This statement revealed the innate goodness of Mrs. Jones. She would have sent Roger to jail. But she did not do so rather like a mother she thought Roger "right from the wrong"

 4.     "You gonna take me to jail?"—  Who said this? Why did the speaker think so? Was the speaker eventually taken to jail? if not, why?
Ans: -  A teenage boy, named Roger, said this to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.

When Roger tried to take away Mrs. Jones' purse, she caught him by the front shirt. Then she said that she would take him to her home. Roger being guilty became afraid and thought that Mrs. Jones was going to take him to jail.

The speaker, namely Roger, was not ultimately taken to jail.

Mrs. Jones had a true generosity and was a very good woman at heart. She did not want to take him to jail because she knew that if she did so, Roger would become a criminal as he would be fearless after that. She wanted to transfer his evil tendency into a good one. That was why Roger was not taken to the jail.
