 3.    What is personification? How does the poet personify the tree in "On Killing A Tree"?
Ans: - Personification is a figure of speech in which a thing - an idea or animal - is given human characteristics. The non-human objects are portrayed in such a way that we feel that they have the ability to act like human beings.

In the poem "On Killing A Tree" Gieve Patel has presented the harm, done to the environment by the human. In this attempt, he personifies a tree as a living thing. He uses many human characteristics to give the tree a human existence. He describes the bark of a tree as leprous. Leprosy is a human disease but the poet, here,  uses it to personify the tree. He even says that the bark bleeds, which is a very specific characteristic of human beings. The title itself is an example of personification because of the word 'killing'. A tree can never be killed, it can be cut down because 'killing' is related to human murder. Thus Gieve Patel has successfully presented the indifferentness of man towards nature.

 4.   What are the processes described in the poem "On Killing A Tree" for killing a tree?
Ans: - The phrase, used in the title, 'on killing a tree' literally means about killing a tree or about the process of killing a tree. In this poem, Gieve Patel tries to draw our attention towards the shameless and heartless act of deforestation in the name of industrialization and development. The poem tells us about the processes, which human beings use to cut a tree down or in other words to kill a tree completely. As a simple jab of the knife or chopping is not enough to kill a tree, men use a number of methods for doing that. They uproot it or snap it out of the earth. Then by scorching, choking, browning, hardening and twisting they the task of killing a tree. The poet treats the tree as a sensitive living thing. He also adds some human elements to highlight their struggle for existence.
